Soy Importante paves way to college for Hispanic students
December 19, 2017
By giving Hispanic students opportunities to learn about colleges, Soy Importante paves the way for students to build great futures for themselves.
The club meets monthly to plan parties and participation in community services. They also go to yearly conferences and discuss different scholarships.
“We decorate for pep-rallies and we also go to the square and gather as a community to pass out candy for halloween,” president, Korina Mascorro said. “We host a carwash as a fundraiser we do. The money we earn is used for our trip that we go to at the end of the year.”
Former computer teacher Amauri Martinez, and English teacher Tammy Jones, both decided that there should be a place for Hispanics 10 years ago.
“We wanted them to learn about potential benefits of college and doing well in school for their future,” club sponsor Jones said.
Soy Importante benefits students by giving them the opportunity to discover themselves academically and socially.
“What benefits me in joining this club is that I get to meet new people and make new friends,” senior Gustavo Vazquez said. “I also learn about different college scholarships and other options that are essential to me in my senior year.”
Soy Importante members are inspired to take on leadership skills and other personality traits that can be used in the educational path they choose.
“What really inspires me is the president, Korina,” sophomore Janie Guillen said. “She deals with organizing and making all the activities possible in our club. Even with all the obstacles, she never gives up and I really look up to that. It encourages me to achieve anything I put my mind to.”
Mascorro hopes to attract more members in 2017-2018 in order for Soy Importante to be known.
“I hope for an increase in members and to encourage others to become involved. I want to let the member’s voices be an outlet because they are the ones that create this club,” Mascorro said.
Soy Importante helps members gain new experiences, friends, pathways and overall lets them enjoy the moment.
“I’d like students to know we love to have fun and we love to help people plan for their goals,” Jones said. “We are a great group and we support each other in so many ways. The members are always enthusiastic and excited about doing new things. It’s never boring with Soy Importante events.”
